How do I setup Duo Two Factor Authentication on my device(s)?
Answer
The following options are available for authenticating using the Duo software (in order of preferred method). Please expand the panels in this article for instructions on how to setup Duo Two Factor Authentication for each device type.
- Duo Mobile App - Verification via Duo Mobile is the fastest and most effective way to access protected services. For more information view the video below.
- Mobile device SMS text message verification.
- Landline telephone such as your BGSU office phone or home phone (phone call notification).
- Passcode notification:
- Open your Duo mobile app from your mobile device, tap the down arrow next to Bowling Green State University. Enter the passcode shown into the text box.
- This can be done when your device is NOT connected to the internet.
- Verification using a security token/key fob device (device-generated code) is the only option if you do not have a mobile device.
- There is a one-time $20.00 fee associated with this method, to cover the cost of this device.
- Please contact ITS for more information regarding security token authentication.
iPhone + Duo Setup
When you first attempt to access an application protected by Two Factor Authentication, you will be prompted to create an account. To set up your iPhone for Duo Two Factor Authentication, follow these steps:
*Please Note: If you have already configured your Duo account and need to add a new device, please reference one of this article How Do I Add a New Duo Device (Same Phone Number)? - if your have a device with a different phone number, please contact ITS directly at 419-372-0999.
- Sign in to MyBGSU.
- From the Duo Welcome screen select the Start setup button.
- On the Add a new device screen, select Mobile phone followed by Continue.
- Select your Country from the drop-down menu.
- Enter the phone number of the device you would like to register.
- Confirm that you have entered the phone number correctly by checking the box below.
- Select Continue.
- Select iPhone as the device type followed by Continue.
- Launch the Apple App Store app on your device and search for "Duo Mobile".
- Select Get and then Install to install the app on your device.
- Select OK when asked if Duo Mobile should be able to send push notifications.
- Once installed, select I have Duo Mobile on the Duo Login screen.
- Open the Duo Mobile app on your phone.
- Select Accept to accept the License Agreement.
- Select Use QR code.
- Use your phone to scan the bar code on the Duo screen
- If you are unable to scan the bar code, select the "Having problems?..." link and follow the instructions provided.
- Once the bar code has been successfully scanned, select Save on the Duo screen.
- Select Continue on the Login screen
- Configure Automatic Phone Options (Optional)
- With this option enabled Duo automatically sends an authentication request via push notification to the app on your tablet or a phone call to your phone (depending on your selection).
- Select Save.
- Select Continue to login.
- Select an Authentication Method.
- Duo Push* - Pushes a login request to your device. Just review the request and select Approve to log in.
- *Duo Push is the recommended authentication method.
- Call Me - Authenticate via phone call.
- Duo will call your phone/device and the status bar at the bottom of the authentication prompt updates that it is dialing your number.
- Answer the call and follow the instructions to authenticate. The authentication prompt's status bar also tells you how to approve the request over the phone.
- Enter a Passcode - Log in using a passcode generated by Duo Mobile.
- Select Enter a Passcode.
- Select Send codes.
- Enter the passcode you received from Duo via text message.
- Select Log In.
- You should now have a registered Duo Two Factor Authentication account.
Android + Duo Setup
When you first attempt to access an application protected by Two Factor Authentication, you will be prompted to create an account. To set up your Android device for Duo Two Factor Authentication, follow these steps:

- From the Duo Welcome screen select the Start setup button.
- On the Add a new device screen, select Mobile phone followed by Continue.
- Select your Country from the drop-down menu.
- Enter the phone number of the device you would like to register.
- Confirm that you have entered the phone number correctly by checking the box below.
- Select Continue.
- Select Call me or Text me
- If using Call me, follow prompts via the call.
- If using Text me, enter the 6-digit code sent to your phone, and select Verify.
- Select Continue
- Select Android as the device type followed by Continue.
- Launch the Google Play Store app on your device and search for "Duo Mobile".
- Select Install to install the app on your device.
- Once installed, select I have Duo Mobile Installed on the Duo screen.
- Open the Duo Mobile app on your mobile device.
- Select Accept to accept the License Agreement.
- Select the + to add an account.
- If prompted, select Allow to allow Duo Mobile to take pictures and record video on your device.
- Use your phone to scan the bar code on the Duo screen
- If you are unable to scan the bar code, select the "Having problems?..." link and follow the instructions provided.
- Once the bar code has been successfully scanned, select Continue on the Duo screen.
- Configure Automatic Phone Options (Optional)
- With this option enabled Duo automatically sends an authentication request via push notification to the app on your smartphone or a phone call to your phone (depending on your selection).
- Select Save.
- Select Continue to login.
- Select an Authentication Method.

- Select iOS followed by Continue.
- Launch the Apple App Store app on your device and search for "Duo Mobile".
- Select Get and then Install to install the app on your device.
- Select OK when asked if Duo Mobile should be able to send push notifications.
- Once installed, select I have Duo Mobile Installed on the Duo screen.
- Open the Duo Mobile app on your tablet.
- Select Accept to accept the License Agreement.
- Select the + to add an account.
- Use your tablet to scan the bar code on the Duo screen

Mobile Phone SMS Text Message + Duo Setup
Please note: you must have text messaging capabilities on your mobile device to authenticate using this method.
When you first attempt to access an application protected by Two Factor Authentication, you will be prompted to create an account. To set up your mobile phone for Duo Two Factor Authentication, follow these steps:
- From the Duo Welcome screen select the Start setup button.
- On the Add a new device screen, select Mobile phone followed by Continue.
- Select your Country from the drop-down menu.
- Enter the phone number of the device you would like to register.
- Confirm that you have entered the phone number correctly by checking the box below.
- Select Continue.
- Select Other (and cell phones) as the device type followed by Continue.
- Configure Automatic Phone Options (Optional)
- With this option enabled Duo automatically sends an authentication request via a phone call to your phone.
- Select Save.
- Select Continue to login.
- To configure your device for SMS text message authentication, on the Choose an Authentication Method screen:
- Select Enter a Passcode.
- Select Send codes.
- Enter the passcode you received from Duo via text message.
- Select Log In.
- You should now have a registered Duo Two Factor Authentication account.
Landline + Duo Setup
When you first attempt to access an application protected by Two Factor Authentication, you will be prompted to create an account. To set up a landline phone for Duo Two Factor Authentication, follow these steps:
- From the Duo Welcome screen select the Start setup button.
- On the Add a new device screen, select landline followed by Continue.
- Select your Country from the drop-down menu.
- Enter the phone number of the landline phone you would like to register.
- Confirm that you have entered the phone number correctly by checking the box below.
- Select Continue.
- Configure Automatic Phone Options (Optional)
- With this option enabled Duo automatically sends an authentication request via a phone call to your phone.
- Select Save.
- Select Continue to login.
- Select Call Me to authenticate via phone call.
- Answer the call and follow the instructions to authenticate. The authentication prompt's status bar also tells you how to approve the request over the phone.
- Duo will call your phone and the status bar at the bottom of the authentication prompt updates that it is dialing your number.
- You should now have a registered Duo Two Factor Authentication account.
