Duo Two Factor Authentication First Time Setup - Android Device


How do I setup Duo Two Factor Authentication for the first time using an Android device?


When you first attempt to access an application protected by Two Factor Authentication, you will be prompted to create an account. To set up your Android device for Duo Two Factor Authentication, follow these steps:

*Please Note: If you have already configured your Duo account and need to add a new device, please reference one of this article How Do I Add a New Duo Device (Same Phone Number)? - if your have a device with a different phone number, please contact ITS directly at 419-372-0999.

  1. From the Duo Welcome screen select the Start setup button. 
  2. On the Add a new device screen, select Mobile phone followed by Continue.
  3. Select your Country from the drop-down menu.
  4. Enter the phone number of the device you would like to register.
  5. Confirm that you have entered the phone number correctly by checking the box below.
  6. Select Continue.
  7. Select Call me or Text me
    1. If using Call me, follow prompts via the call.
    2. If using Text me, enter the 6-digit code sent to your phone, and select Verify.
  8. Select Continue
  9. Select Android as the device type followed by Continue.
  10. Launch the Google Play Store app on your device and search for "Duo Mobile".
  11. Select Install to install the app on your device.
  12. Once installed, select I have Duo Mobile Installed on the Duo screen.
  13. Open the Duo Mobile app on your mobile device.
  14. Select Accept to accept the License Agreement.
  15. Select the to add an account.
  16. If prompted, select Allow  to allow Duo Mobile to take pictures and record video on your device.
  17. Use your phone to scan the bar code on the Duo screen
    • If you are unable to scan the bar code, select the "Having problems?..." link and follow the instructions provided. 
  18. Once the bar code has been successfully scanned, select Continue on the Duo screen.
  19. Configure Automatic Phone Options (Optional)
    • With this option enabled Duo automatically sends an authentication request via push notification to the app on your smartphone or a phone call to your phone (depending on your selection).
      1. Select Save.
      2. Select Continue to login.
  20. Select an Authentication Method.
    • Duo Push* - Pushes a login request to your phone. Just review the request and select Approve to log in.
      • *Duo Push is the recommended authentication method.
    • Call Me - Authenticate via phone call
      1. Duo will call your phone and the status bar at the bottom of the authentication prompt updates that it is dialing your number.
      2. Answer the call and follow the instructions to authenticate. The authentication prompt's status bar also tells you how to approve the request over the phone.
    • ​​​​​​​Enter a Passcode - Log in using a passcode generated by Duo Mobile.
      1. Select Enter a Passcode.
      2. Select Send codes.
      3. Enter the passcode you received from Duo via text message.
      4. Select Log In.
  21. You should now have a registered Duo Two Factor Authentication account.
