What Is a Softphone?

What is a softphone?

A softphone is an application that allows a user to make and receive phone calls over a network via a computer without the need for a physical phone. BGSU currently utilizes the Cisco Jabber application for softphone use.

When the University was required to shift to completely remote operations (in response to the COVID-19 pandemic), employees were setup with softphone service to make and receive calls using their BGSU phone extension from off-campus locations. This service allows for increased flexibility and saves the University on costs that would be allocated to physical telephone equipment.
