Question
What is the BGSU computer inventory naming scheme?
Answer
For inventory and management purposes, BGSU devices will be named with one of the prefixes listed below.
- A - Administrative
- This naming prefix encompasses primary devices allocated to BGSU employees for their individual use.
- These are the only computers that will show up in the employee device upgrade inventory.
- C - Classroom
- This naming prefix encompasses both ITS and department funded computers used in BGSU classrooms.
- F - Firelands
- Firelands follows the main campus naming convention, but prefixes all asset names with an "F" designator. (e.g. FA = Firelands Administrative)
- G - Group/Shared/Student
- This naming prefix encompasses group, shared and/or student devices or for graduate student use, that have no single user assigned to the device. Instead, these devices are assigned to an owning department.
- L - Lab
- This naming prefix encompasses both ITS and department funded computers used in BGSU computer labs.
- M - Multimedia Digital Signage
- This naming prefix encompasses computers used with BGSU’s digital signs.
- P - Public
- This naming prefix encompasses open-use computers in open areas such as hallways. For example, internet kiosks.
- S - Secondary
- This naming prefix encompasses additional, secondary devices not classified as the owner's primary device.
Virtual Machines
- AVM - Administrative Primary Virtual Machines
- GVM - Group/Shared/Student Virtual Machines
- SVM - Secondary Computer Virtual Machines
