What is the BGSU computer inventory naming scheme?

Answer

For inventory and management purposes, BGSU devices will be named with one of the prefixes listed below.

  • A - Administrative 
    • This naming prefix encompasses primary devices allocated to BGSU employees for their individual use.
    • These are the only computers that will show up in the employee device upgrade inventory.
  • C - Classroom 
    • This naming prefix encompasses both ITS and department funded computers used in BGSU classrooms.
  • ​​​​​​​F - Firelands
    • Firelands follows the main campus naming convention, but prefixes all asset names with an "F" designator. (e.g. FA = Firelands Administrative)
  • G - Group/Shared/Student  
    • This naming prefix encompasses group, shared and/or student devices or for graduate student use, that have no single user assigned to the device. Instead, these devices are assigned to an owning department
  • L - Lab 
    • This naming prefix encompasses both ITS and department funded computers used in BGSU computer labs.
  • M - Multimedia Digital Signage 
    • This naming prefix encompasses computers used with BGSU’s digital signs.
  • P - Public 
    • This naming prefix encompasses open-use computers in open areas such as hallways. For example, internet kiosks.
  • S - Secondary 
    • This naming prefix encompasses additional, secondary devices not classified as the owner's primary device. 

 

Virtual Machines

  • AVM - Administrative Primary Virtual Machines
  • GVM - Group/Shared/Student Virtual Machines
  • SVM - Secondary Computer Virtual Machines
