Randomizing questions/answers in Canvas

Question

How do I randomize questions/answers in Canvas?

Answer

The Canvas question bank feature is the key to creating a quiz that has randomized questions. Once complete, instructors are able to move content (question bank)  from course shell to course shell. Note: If you need your questions to appear in a specific order, do not place quiz questions inside a question group/bank. If you need assistance creating a question bank, please use this guide.

  1. Begin by signing into Canvas and selecting the course you wish to work on.
  2. Select Quizzes from the navigation pane.
  3. Next, select +Quiz.
  4. From there select the Questions Tab.
  5. Select + New Question Group.
  6. Select the Link to a Question Bank link.
  7. Selectquestion bank you previously created. Canvas will automatically randomize the questions. If you wish to randomize the answers, the Shuffle Answers box must be selected from the quiz details.
    • Note: If you need assistance creating a Question Bank, please follow this guide.
  8. Once you have completed the quiz details/options, select save and publish to make the available to students.

Note: If you create and save a question group without linking to a question bank you cannot add a bank to that question group later. You will have to create a new question group.
