What Is the Recommended Two Factor Authentication Method at BGSU?

Question

What is the recommended Duo Two Factor Authentication method at BGSU?

Answer

BGSU Information Technology Services recommends using Duo Push notifications (configured using the Duo Mobile app) when authenticating to Duo-protected BGSU services.

  • Duo Push authentication does not cost the university money to use.
    • SMS text message and phone call authentication require Duo credits for use.
    • BGSU pays thousands of dollars for Duo credits each year.
    • Every phone call authentication uses 2 credits, and every SMS text authentication uses 1 credit.
    • BGSU uses approximately 200,000 Duo credits every 5 weeks (as of May 2022).
  • Duo Push authentication is quicker than SMS text/phone call authentication.
    • Authenticating via text message requires waiting to receive the text, reading a passcode, and typing it in.
    • Phone call authentication requires the user to physically answer a phone call, listen to a recording, and and then use the dial pad to approve the login.
    • Duo Push is as simple as approving a notification on your mobile device
  • Duo push authentication is more secure than SMS text/phone call authentication.
    • Duo Push authentication uses end-to-end encryption that SMS text and phone calls cannot.
    • The Duo Push screen displays detailed information about the application and source device that initiated the authentication request.

To enable Duo Push authentication on your device, configure the Duo mobile app using these device-specific instructions and select the Duo Push authentication method when prompted.
