Mac Audio Troubleshooting

Question

How can I troubleshoot audio issues on my Mac device?

Answer

  1. Select the Apple Menu.
  2. Select System Preferences.
  3. Select Sound.
  4. Under Output:
    1. If you want to use the device's built-in speakers, select Internal Speakers. If you want to use an external device (such as headphones) select the appropriate device name from the list.
      • If using external hardware, ensure it is plugged into the audio out port or USB port.
    2. Ensure the Output volume slider is not all the way to the left and that the Mute checkbox is not selected.
  5. Under Input:
    1. If you want to use the device's built-in microphone, select Internal Microphone. If you want to use an external microphone select the appropriate device name from the list.
      • If using external hardware, ensure it is plugged into the audio in port or USB port.
    2. Ensure the Input volume slider is not all the way or too far to the left.
  6. Once you have confirmed the appropriate input/output has been selected, close the Sound Settings window.

Please note: It is recommended that you check these settings each time you connect or disconnect an input/output device to ensure that the sound settings do not auto-select the wrong device
