Submitting Large Media Files for Canvas Assignments

Issue

Canvas is limited to a maximum file size of 500 MB for media files in assignments. Often times, media files created can exceed this limit, posing difficulty in how students may submit the assignment. This guide will explain how instructors can setup an assignment to accept large media files, and how students can submit these such assignments.

Resolution

The solution to handle this situation is the use of OneDrive, which has a maximum file size of 10 GB. Students will be able to upload the large media file to OneDrive, copy and share  the link for the file, and paste it into the assignment in Canvas. Instructors will then be able to access the media files via the shared links that the students have submitted for the assignment.

Instructor Instructions

  1. Create a new assignment in your Canvas course.
  2. Set the Submission type to Online and check the box for Website URL.
