Reset macOS Keychain

Question

How do I reset my macOS Keychain using Keychain Access?

Answer

If you remember your previous password, follow these instructions:

  1. Select Utilities from the Go menu in the Finder.
  2. Open Keychain Access.
  3. From the Edit menuchoose Change Password for Keychain "login".
  4. Type in the former password of the account that you are currently logged in to, then select OK.
  5. If you entered the correct password, a new window will appear; enter the former password again in the Current Password field.
  6. In the New Password fieldtype the password that matches your new/current account password.
  7. Re-enter the newer password in the Verify field, then click OK.

If you do not remember your previous password, follow these instructions:

  1. Select Utilities from the Go menu in the Finder.
  2. Open Keychain Access.
  3. In Keychain Accesschoose Settings from the Keychain Access menu.
  4. If available, select the Reset My Default Keychain button. This will remove the login keychain and create a new one with the password provided.
