How do I upgrade my university device to the Windows 11 operation system?

Microsoft has announced that they are planning to end support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025 and to ensure these devices continue to receive all existing Windows devices running Windows 10 or older must upgrade to the Windows 11 operating system. Keeping your university device's Windows operating system (OS) up-to-date is important to maintain system security and stability and to be in compliance with BGSU's security standards.
Expand the panels in this article for instructions on how to upgrade and to confirm your device is updated.
Please Note: The upgrade may take up to 8 hours so please leave your device open (laptop), ON and connected to a power source. We also recommend removing any external hardware such as USB/flash drives, dongles, etc.
How to upgrade to Windows 11
- The upgrade may take up to 8 hours (depending on internet speeds) and will include at least one restart so please leave your device open (laptop), powered ON and connected to a power source.
- Remove all USB devices (except mouse and keyboard).
- In the Windows search bar in the bottom left-hand corner of your screen, type Software Center and select Enter.
- Users must be connected to the BGSU network or VPN (GlobalProtect) to access the Software Center.
- Select Operating Systems from the left menu.
- Select the job named Required BGSU Operating System Upgrade: Windows 11.
- Select Install to begin the upgrade.
What to do if you do not see the upgrade job in your Software Center
If you do not see the Required BGSU Operating System Upgrade: Windows 11 in your Software Center:
- Restart your device.
- Connect to the BGSU Network/VPN (GlobalProtect).
- Re-open Software Center.
- Select Device Compliance from the left menu in the Software Center window.
- Select Check Compliance.
- When the Compliance Check is complete, close Software Center.
- Leave your device powered ON and connected to the BGSU VPN.
- Open Software Center and check to see if the Required BGSU Operating System Upgrade: Windows 11 job is there by following the above steps to update your device (it may take up to 4 hours for the job to appear after completing the Compliance Check).
- If Required BGSU Operating System Upgrade: Windows 11 is still not displaying, contact the ITS service desk.
Confirm your device is upgraded to Windows 11
To confirm your device is updated:
- Select the Windows Start button.
- Select Settings (gear icon).
- Select System.
- Select About.
- The current Edition/Version is listed under the Windows specifications header.
- If the device is currently up to date or has been successfully upgraded, the Windows Edition should display Windows 11 Enterprise and the Version will be 23H2.
