University Device Setup Instructions (Mac)

Question

How do I set up my University-owned Mac device?

Answer

Please review our What's Included with My University Laptop article for information on what is included with your device and follow these instructions to set up your University-owned Mac laptop:

*If not using a dock, skip to Monitor section.

  1. Put together the dock's power cord (2-pieces).
  2. Plug the power cord into the back of the docking station and plug the other end into a power outlet/strip.
  3. Plug the display port cable into the back of the docking station.
  4. If hard wiring to a network, plug the Ethernet cable (Internet) into the back of the docking station and plug the other end into an Ethernet hub/router/wall port.

Monitor Setup

Equipment Needed: Monitor, monitor power cord

  1. Plug the power cord into the back of the monitor and plug the other end into a power outlet/strip.
  2. Plug the other end of the display port cable into the back of the monitor.

Laptop Setup

Equipment Needed: Laptop, multiport adapter (if not using docking station), HDMI cable

Using One Display

  1. Plug multiport adapter into laptop.
  2. Plug one end of the HDMI cable into the multiport adapter and plug the other end into the monitor.
  3. Power ON the laptop.

Using Multiple Displays

  1. Plug the docking station into the laptop.
  2. Power ON the laptop.
  3. For instructions on configuring your display settings for multiple displays, please click this link: How to Change Display Settings for Multiple External Displays (Monitors).

Please note: only one display can be plugged in per USB port on a Mac. Multiple monitors cannot be connected through a single dock. Each external display beyond the first will need to plug into separate port on your computer not used by the dock. This will likely require an adaptor, but does not require an additional dock.

Keyboard/Mouse

Equipment Needed: Keyboard (wireless), mouse (wireless), dongle.

  1. If using a wireless keyboard & mouse, plug the dongle into the USB port(s) on the docking station.
    1. Add batteries to mouse and turn ON.
    2. Add batteries to keyboard and turn ON.
