Software License Type Definitions

This article describes some of the most common software license types vendors may offer and helps to define the meaning of the License Type attribute in the TDX software inventory/registry.

 

Typically the software can only be installed on BGSU-owned devices, and only a specific number of users can run the software simultaneously – once that number is reached, no additional launches will complete; this is usually enforced by a license server, vendor-controlled cloud server, or a KeyServer.  This software may additionally require a license key and/or activation as well.

Typically the software requires a license key and/or activation code, and installations will almost always need to be tracked in some capacity.  Installations are typically restricted to the number of licenses owned as licenses are assigned and/or consumed upon installation.

Typically the software can be installed on University and sometimes personal devices with limited or no restrictions but may still require authentication via SSO (Single Sign On).  This software may additionally require a license key and/or activation as well.

Typically the software will not require a license key/activation and can typically be installed on any device without restriction.

Typically the software requires authentication either via SSO (Single Sign On) or through the creation of a user account if not integrated with SSO.  Licenses are then assigned to the named user or to the user group based on vendor’s implementation.  This software may additionally require a license key and/or activation as well.
