Answer
Who can use it the service?
BGSU Faculty, Staff, Students, and community members free of charge.
Wiping and Destroying Data
This service will fulfill any BGSU affiliate’s need for erasing or destruction of sensitive data and recycling of aged materials. For digital media that may contain University data, it is important to follow the document retention timelines designated by your office's Records Retention Schedule.
All of the following types of electronic media can be brought to the Data Destruction & Recycling Service:
- Hard drives (IDE, SCSI, SATA)
- USB flash drives
- CD/DVDs
- Media cards
- Tapes
Note: Due to the potential sensitive nature of the data, media for destruction must be submitted in person.
The main objective for hard drives will be to format the media by DoD (Department of Defense) standards, but, if this option is not viable, the drives will be destroyed. USB drives will be erased or destroyed depending on need. All CDs, DVDs, and tapes will be destroyed. Upon request, a Certificate of Destruction can be provided once the the drives have been destroyed.
Note: The erasing process destroys all data and programs on the device. Operating system and application software will need to be reinstalled after the procedure.
