What is VirtualBox software?
Answer
VirtualBox software is available to BGSU students to run x86 virtualization. The software is most commonly installed on Mac computers to run software that requires the Windows operating system.
Students may install VirtualBox on their personal device by following these instructions or may request assistance installing VirtualBox by contacting Information Technology Services (ITS). Both in-person service or remote appointment options are available.
Additional Information Regarding VirtualBox for Personal Devices
- Only available for student use on personal machines
- VirtualBox is currently not supported on Mac computers with Apple silicon.
- To check to see if your Mac computer is compatible with VirtualBox, review the list of Mac computers with Apple silicon here.
- If your device does have Apple Silicon, ITS is approved to install UTM with a Windows VM. Please contact the ITS Service Desk and schedule an appointment with Student Support Services to get this installed.
- VirtualBox install process on personal machines take between 2-4 business days.
- VirtualBox can be installed on an external hard drive, but with reduced performance (not recommended).
- 50GB of free space is required on your hard drive.
- Install Windows 10 on your Virtual Machine created with VirtualBox software by obtaining a free license key from OnTheHub.
