What is VirtualBox software?

Answer

VirtualBox software that can run x86 virtualization. The software is most commonly installed on Mac computers to run software that requires the Windows operating system.

Students may install VirtualBox on their personal devices by following these instructions. Beginning Aug. 1, 2025, ITS will no longer assist with the installation of VirtualBox on personal Mac devices.


Additional Information Regarding VirtualBox for Personal Devices

  • Only available for student use on personal machines
  • VirtualBox is currently not supported on Mac computers with Apple silicon.
    • To check to see if your Mac computer is compatible with VirtualBox, review the list of Mac computers with Apple silicon here.
  • VirtualBox can be installed on an external hard drive, but with reduced performance (not recommended).
  • 50GB of free space is required on your hard drive.
