The following defines the various service classifications used by Information Technology Services. These classifications help ITS determine how to route, prioritize, and manage technology work.
IT Service
An IT Service is an established, repeatable service ITS provides to meet a common technology need. These requests typically follow a known process and do not require significant analysis, planning, or coordination to fulfill.
Examples: Digital Signage Requests, Account Setups, New Computer Hardware, New Software installation, General IT Service Requests, etc. To view our Service Catalog please click here.
IT Ongoing Operations
- IT Ongoing Operations includes work ITS teams perform to maintain, support, improve, or enhance existing technology services and business processes. Operational work may be recurring or may involve a one-time change or enhancement that can be managed within an ITS team's normal responsibilities and available capacity.
- Examples may include system configuration, maintenance, upgrades, patching, reporting, modifications to existing integrations, system enhancements, process improvements, and other changes to supported technology.
- Please note: In general, ongoing operational work does not normally proceed through the ITS Project Governance Process. ITS teams evaluate, prioritize, and schedule operational work based on available resources and other commitments.
IT Project
- An IT Project is a temporary effort to create something new that helps grow and improve university systems, structures, or processes. Unlike ongoing operational tasks, projects have a defined start and end date, and are designed to meet specific university goals. Once those goals are met, the project is completed. Examples of new projects include launching a new application, adding software or hardware, or integrating a new module into an existing technology platform.
- Please note: Requests identified as potential projects are referred to the Project Management Office (PMO) for further evaluation and, when appropriate, entry into the ITS Project Governance Process.
