Question
What are Windows version updates and what do I need to know about them?
Answer
Rather than creating entirely new operating systems like they did in the past (Windows 95, Windows 7, Windows 8), Microsoft started updating Windows 10 with minor version updates, allowing the system’s look and feel to change slightly while still remaining Windows 10. This approach made it easier for Microsoft to keep devices working smoothly and securely by regularly adding new features, security improvements, bug fixes, and performance enhancements. The same method continued with Windows 11, helping to improve security, performance, and features without the need for a completely new version of the operating system.

Why Do We Need to Stay Up-To-Date on Operating System Versions?
Over time, thousands of BGSU Windows devices risk being out of support if they are not upgraded to a more current operating system (OS) version. Upgrading the OS has a number of benefits, including additional ransomware prevention, stronger malware security tools, more efficient updates for Windows OS, and several “quality of life” updates.
What Windows Operating System Version Am I Currently Running?
To check your current Windows OS version:
- Select the Windows Start button (in bottom left hand corner of desktop).
- Select Settings (gear icon).
- Select System.
- Select About.
- The Version number is available under the Windows specifications header.
How Do I Know If My Device Needs a Version Upgrade?
ITS monitors University device version numbers and the out-of-support dates published by Microsoft. Over time, every University device will need to be upgraded. ITS will reach out to those in need of an upgrade.
What Do I Need to Do if Selected for a Version Upgrade?
If your device is selected for a version upgrade, please leave your device on campus or connected to BGSU VPN, plugged in, locked, powered on and lid open (laptop only). ITS will attempt to push the upgrade overnight. If successful, you should be able to log in the next morning with an updated Windows version.
If you are off-campus or working remotely when the upgrade is pushed, the upgrade will be applied the next time your machine connects to the BGSU network on campus or BGSU VPN.
If issues are encountered, an ITS support technician may need to come to your office to update your machine by hand.
What If I Have Multiple Devices Needing a Windows Version Update
If you have multiple devices, you will need to look up which version number your device(s) are currently running. Compare this number to the version number indicated in the ITS email notification to see if your device is currently being targeted or has already been targeted. Follow these instructions to find your device's current Windows version.
