Question

What are some best practices to consider when using the BGSU VPN?

Answer

Please keep the following in mind when using the BGSU VPN:

  • Make connecting to the VPN a part of your regular work routine. Connect in the morning and disconnect at the end of the day.
  • Connecting regularly helps ensure your operating system, computer policies, and access to BGSU operating system management including Microsoft Software Center, etc. are current.
  • Log out of VPN when in transit.
  • To download/install applications from the Microsoft Software Center, you must be connected to the VPN.
  • Be aware of the applications/services that require VPN to access off-campus. Connecting as part of your daily routine eliminates this concern and allows for a seamless user experience.
  • Utilize VPN rather than a Remote Desktop Connection (RDP) to access BGSU software applications.
    • If you have individually licensed software located on an on-campus device that you require off-campus, contact ITS to review your access options.
  • Store files* in the cloud using OneDrive. This provides easy access via any internet connection (including any mobile device), rather than storing on the R Drive (fileshare) and having access limited by VPN.
    • *If working with sensitive/restricted data, please review our Data Protection webpage to determine the appropriate method for storing your files.
  • Ensure you always adhere to the security requirements outlined in our Remote Access Standards.
