Question

How do I move data from my Chromebook to my Google Drive account?

Answer

Please follow the steps below to move data from a Chromebook to Google Drive.

  1. Open Google Drive by selecting the Search Key (magnifying glass icon) on your keyboard and typing Google Drive into the search bar that appears. Select the Drive icon to open it in a new window.
  2. Under the Folders section of Google Drive, use a double-click to bring up the Options menu and select 'New Folder'from the list. Name your folder.
  3. Keep this window open by dragging it to the far left side of the screen so that it snaps to take up exactly half of the screen.
  4. Select the Search key on your keyboard and then type Files into the search field. Select the Files icon once it appears below the search field to open it in a new window.
  5. Select My Files from the column on the left-hand side to see a list of all folders/files stored locally on the computer. Select the elipsies (three dots) in the upper right hand corner of this window and select Select All.
  6. Drag and drop the files into the folder you recently created in Google Drive to back them up.
  7. Sign into Google Drive (https://www.google.com/drive/) on another device to verify the files backed up correctly.

*ITS does not recommend the use of Chromebooks because they are not compatible with many academic and enterprise applications.
