Body

Question

What types of data imports does Power BI support?

Answer

Power BI can connect to various types of data. Common file import types include:

  • Excel spreadsheets
  • CSV files
  • Standard text files
  • Access database
  • PDF
  • Websites
  • Oracle database
  • SQL server

Third-party data is often accessible by making API connections to the data stored in those systems.

Power BI utilizes a dataset/semantic model which is a collection of data that Power BI can import or connect to. One or many semantic models can be used in a single Power BI report.  Semantic models are found in workspaces and can be used by more than one workspace.  For example, an excel spreadsheet, an Oracle database, a text file, or a webpage could all be semantic models and all be used within the same report.
