Power BI Data Imports

Summary

Information regarding the types of data imports supported by Power BI as well as information regarding Power BI's semantic model (formerly called datasets)

Body

Question

What types of data imports does Power BI support?

Answer

Power BI can connect to various types of data. Common file import types include:

  • Excel spreadsheets
  • CSV files
  • Standard text files
  • Access database
  • PDF
  • Websites
  • Oracle database
  • SQL server

Third-party data is often accessible by making API connections to the data stored in those systems.

Power BI reports connect to a semantic model (formerly called a dataset), which is a structured collection of data such as tables, relationships, and measures. Each report is built on a single semantic model, but that model can pull data from multiple types of data sources. Semantic models are stored in workspaces and can be reused across multiple reports and even across different workspaces.
