Question
How do I upgrade my university device to the latest version of Windows?
Answer
Keeping your university device's Windows operating system (OS) up-to-date is important to maintain system security and stability and to be in compliance with BGSU's security standards. To upgrade the Windows OS on your university device, follow these steps:
Upgrade Windows OS
**Please note: The upgrade may take up to 8 hours (depending on internet speeds) so please leave your device open (laptop), powered ON and connected to a power source.**
- Your device will need to be on campus and connected to Eduroam or connected to VPN if off-campus.
- Remove all USB devices (except mouse and keyboard).
- In the Windows search bar in the bottom left-hand corner of your screen, type Software Center and select Enter.
- Select Operating Systems from the left menu.
- Select the job named Required BGSU Operating System Upgrade: <Release Version>, where <Release Version> is ITS's latest supported release.
- Select Install to begin the update.
- The Windows 11 upgrade process will then begin, and an Installation Progress bar will be visible.
- Your device may need to reboot several times during the upgrade process. You will know the upgrade is complete when the Windows login screen is displayed.
Check/Confirm Windows OS Version
Follow the steps below to check your current Windows OS version/confirm the upgrade was successful:
- Select the Windows Start button.
- Select Settings (gear icon).
- Select System.
- Select About.
- The current Version is listed under the Windows specifications header.
- If the device is currently up-to-date or has been successfully upgraded, the Windows version will be equal to the <Release Version> from the job name.
