Cisco Webex Classroom Setup

There are unique classroom environments in which specialized equipment may obscure the view of some students to the standard projection screen used by an instructor, and it is crucial that students all be equally opportune in viewing an instructor's lesson and projected work.

For these such environments, we may take advantage of an academic tool provided by the university - Cisco Webex. This tool will allow an instructor to record and transmit the content of a computer screen in real time. Students are then able to connect to a session started by the instructor using laptops, so as to view the content on the instructor's computer screen, just as they would otherwise view it from a projector. This use of laptops to share the screen, rather than a projector, eliminates the potential for specialized classroom equipment from obscuring the view of any students.

Let's take a look at how to set up this session:

  • Load WebEx with the following link using Google Chrome.
  • Log in via the link in the top right corner of the page
  • Click the green 'Start Meeting' button
    • This will launch the Cisco Webex Meeting Center application
  • Click on the 'Meeting Info' tab
  • Take note of the meeting number, as you will need to provide this to your students
    • Email, Canvas message, or simply writing it on a whiteboard
  • Once your students have all joined the meeting session, go to the 'Quick Start' tab and click 'Share Screen'
    • Students will now be able to view the content displayed on the screen of the instructor station

  • Load WebEx with the following link using Google Chrome.
  • Enter the meeting number provided by your instructor in the box onscreen and click 'Join'
    • This will launch the Cisco Webex Meeting Center application
  • Once your instructor opts to begin screen sharing, you will be able to see the content from the instructor station on the screen of the classroom laptop
