Canvas Course Quota (Storage Limit)

Question

What is my Canvas storage quota and can I request an increase?

Answer

  • Each Canvas course has a 2GB storage quota.
    • Any quota increase will need to be reviewed by the ITS Canvas (LMS) team. Increasing storage size can create future issues when you attempt to copy content from previous semesters.
  • Canvas course storage is intended to be used for smaller documents such as PDFs, Word docs, PowerPoint presentations, and Excel sheets.
    • Canvas can be used to host small media files (<500Mb).  Larger media files can be stored in Canvas Studio or a third-party cloud service like YouTube or Vimeo, and then linked within your Canvas Course.
    • To save storage space in Canvas, instructors are encouraged to host class recordings in the service which created the files, i.e. Zoom or Teams.
    • If needed, instructors can also reduce the size of a media file for hosting in Canvas using a third-party tool like Handbrake.  This tool can reduce the size of a larger media file to less than 500Mb.
    • PowerPoint files containing media need to be optimized before uploading.
  • Quota size can be increased if use is due to excess document storage or instructor has optimized the file sizes as much as possible.
