Utilizing Otter.ai for Video Captioning

How do I use Otter.ai for video captioning?

If the need for video captioning should arise, instructors can use a freeware program called Otter.ai. Below are steps outlining the account creation process and basic use.

Creating an Otter.ai Account

  1. Navigate to Otter.ai.
  2. Select Sign up and enter the required information.
    • If you already have an account, select the sign in button to enter your credentials. Note this will not be the same as a BGSU username and password.
  3. Bypass the calendar sync, if desired, by selecting Go to the App on the top right corner.

Uploading a Video Needing Captions

  1. Open Otter.ai and select import in the top right corner.
  2. Drag and drop or browse for the video that you would like to upload.
    • The basic Otter plan (free) only includes 600 transcription minutes per month for recordings up to 40 minutes long per recording.
  3. Select Done.
  4. Under recent activity, you will see your video being processed.
    • If it does not show up, you may have to refresh the page
  5. Once your video is done processing, your file will show as ready under recent activity.
  6. From here, you can see the captioning that was added to your video.
  7. To export the captioning, select the three horizontal dots in the top right corner and select export text.
  8. Your video captioning will then be downloaded into a .TXT file
